The Rio Theatre is proud to present documentaries MATT SHEPARD IS A FRIEND OF MINE and Oscar winner THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK on Friday, May 22 – Harvey Milk Day.

These two films about two very different individuals in two different decades are each astounding portraits of men who, unwittingly, became icons within not just the LGBT community, but important figures of social change and tolerance whose lives and legacies have impacted us all. MATT SHEPARD IS A FRIEND OF MINE director, producer and editor Michele Josue and cinematographer Craig Trudeau are set to join us for an in-person discussion for a discussion of the film. Other guests TBD; more info coming soon.

Pflag Vancouver acknowledges that our work spans many Territories and Treaty areas and that our meetings are held on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are with us today, to those who have gone before us, and for the youth that inspire us. We recognize the land as an act of Reconciliation, as recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action, and of gratitude to those whose territory we reside on, work on or are visiting.
